The Skinny:
Frida and Cal retreat into the wilderness leaving behind everything including remaining family members who had managed to survive after a long slow decline and collaspe of the U.S. The decline left the United States in shambles. Large cities dissolved into smaller communties allowing the rich to survive in ruling post and evaluating people on what they had to offer. This created a class of workers and leaders essentially, if you could not exist in this world, you became an outcast, pirate or even worse a terrorist against your fellow Americans.
This period of Frida's life is dubbed the "afterlife" and just surviving becomes their whole existence. Hunting, foraging, gardening, and living in an abandoned shed living a hard tedious life until they meet the neighbors. From that moment on life changes once again, as they realize Frida is pregnant and they are not alone.
Once they decide to venture out into the wilderness from the safety of the life they had worked so hard to achieve, life becomes very complicated for Cal and Frida. History, family, and every ugly scary thing they thought would never be a problem, is now holding their future hostage. The plot takes interesting twist and seems to be laying the ground work for the next book.
The characters are interesting enough and I grew to like Cal and Frida. I wanted them to win and in the end I am still not certain if they won. The potential for a great story is dangled like a carrot or a cliffhanger for the next book.
